History
The Invasive Species started out playing at a very remote food truck setup in Kanaio. There was a stage overlooking the road, and looking out over Kaho’olawe and Molokini. The sunset was the regular audience, but when people would take the back way back from Hana, they’d stop and get out and dance in the road.
The usual lineup was:
- John Grover - Vocals
- Devin Sylva - Guitars
- Lokahi Sylva - Bass
- Randall Littleton - Drums
Once the songs started coming together, it made sense to move to playing around the island. The bars in Kihei were natural choices - especially the seedy ones. With an occasional party or Earth Day festival, that went on for a few years.
Those gigs usually included Berto Prieto on Percussion, and sometiems Josh Greenbaum filling in on Drums.
There were a few attempts to go into the studio, and some stuff got recorded, but with the focus on live shows, there wasn’t much time to mix any of that material until the Pandemic put a stop to live music on the island for a few years.
The resulting album was from one of the sessions that included John, Devin, Josh, and Berto. It would have been nice to use one of the recordings with Lokahi and Randall, but there was much more salvagabile material from the other session.
